The Webber Wentzel Competition Practice has an enviable reputation as a provider of world-class legal services across the full spectrum of competition law, including merger notifications, cartel investigations, competition litigation, exemptions and compliance and regulatory advice.

The Practice is a leading authority on competition law in South Africa, partnering with our clients to enhance profitability, and delivering quality services on time and with passion. The Practice’s clients include the leading listed and unlisted companies in South Africa across a range of industries.

The Practice has the most number of ranked partners of any competition practice in South Africa and is comprised of lawyers with commercial and economic training and experience. It includes the former head of research at the Competition Tribunal, the former head of the mergers division at the Competition Commission and staff formerly employed at the competition authorities.

Practitioners are committed to the development of competition law not only in South Africa but also elsewhere in Africa. To this end, as part of Webber Wentzel's recent initiative in joining the ALN (previously Africa Legal Network), a network of law firms across the African continent which work closely through matter referrals, secondments, training, know-how and marketing, the Practice has established a competition "virtual" cross border practice group.

Practitioners have worked on the most significant merger cases in the last year dealing with competition and public interest issues and are currently acting in most of the contested merger decisions of the Competition Commission before the Competition Tribunal.

Practitioners are also acting for clients in numerous leniency and cartel settlement matters across a range of industries, and are involved in a number of complaint proceedings before the Competition Tribunal. The Practice is leading the way in a private enforcement action by representing a damages claimant in the first such case of its kind in South Africa.

Significant clients of the Competition Practice include industry leaders such as AECI, AFGRI, Aveng, BA/Comair, Danfoss, Danone, De Beers, Evonik, the JSE, JTI, Life Healthcare, Macsteel, Masana Petroleum, MTN, Monier Roofing SA, Oceana, Primedia, Saint-Gobain, Sasol, SC Johnson, Siemens, Stefanutti Stocks, Tongaat Hulett, Unilever, UTI, Wal-Mart and Woolworths.

The Practice also provides general counsel on a range of issues relating to various industries including: agri-processing, mining, petrochemical, automotive, liquid fuels, chemicals, plastics, construction, consumer goods, tobacco, distribution and retail, financial, healthcare, air travel, forestry, fishing and information and communication technology sectors.
