Leon calls for South Africa to join mining transparency drive

- 29 February 2012

A recent article on Mining Weekly reported on the Mandela Institute discussion at Wits University and how Peter Leon, a partner at Webber Wentzel, addressed the issue of South Africa’s non membership of the global Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI).The aim of EITI is to strengthen governance in mineral-rich countries by improving transparency and accountability.

Leon highlighted the fact that 7 out of the 14 countries at the stage of complying with the EITI and 14 out of the 21 countries at candidate stage were African.

After stating numerous reasons, Leon strongly advised the country to reconsider its position and sign up to EITI as it would be a “good day for good governance”.
