Overview

This division of the Webber Wentzel Media and Technology Department specialises in the Commercial Law aspects of the Media and Entertainment Industry in South Africa, including Copyright, Intellectual Property Rights, Defamation, Tax, Financial Structuring and Freedom of Speech issues. Our areas of expertise and specialist legal advice in terms of Media and Entertainment Law include:

  • all aspects of Media Content Law, Copyright, and Common Law in general;
  • vetting newspaper articles and television programmes for defamatory material, sub-judice and related statutory common law legal liability;
  • defending court actions based on defamation and/or breach of privacy;
  • advising on the finance, production and distribution of films and television programmes;
  • defending clients against complaints made to the Film and Publications Board;
  • advising on music recording contracts, licensing, artists and publishing agreements, and related legal issues;
  • statutory protection of performers, legal protection of music, restrictions of advertising, protection of the arts and entertainers;
  • representing clients before the Advertising Standards Authority and the Broadcasting Complaints Commission.
