Essential services update

The Essential Services Committee (ESC) announced its plans to investigate whether certain services should be declared as essential. The ESC will also be looking into whether the designations of a number of current essential services should be removed.

Employers within these sectors should be aware of this development. The ESC will be hosting oral hearings for representations from interested parties during September 2019 at CCMA offices in these cities: Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town, Bloemfontein and Port Elizabeth.

Services under investigation

The ESC is investigating whether these services should be declared as essential:

  • production, transport and distribution of fuel; and
  • transportation of optical lenses.

Essential services being reconsidered

The ESC is also investigating whether these essential services should no longer be designated as essential:

  • correctional services; and
  • services required for the functioning of courts.

For full details of the oral hearings, you can view the full notice here.
