On 9 April 2025, the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, announced a 90-day “pause" on the implementation of most increased tariff rates. The suspension applies from 10 April to 9 July 2025.


On 2 April 2025, the President of the United States of America (USA), Donald Trump, issued an executive order imposing an additional 10% import duty on nearly all imports into the USA. This duty will take effect at 00h01 Eastern Daylight Time (06h01 South African Standard Time) on 5 April 2025. This duty is in addition to any other applicable duties or tariffs.


​The hostile disposition of the United States' (US) President Donald Trump towards South Africa raises serious concerns about the possible exclusion of South Africa as a beneficiary of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) which is set for renewal in 2025. With South Africa consistently ranking as the top AGOA user, as well as the number one African agricultural exporter under AGOA, we look at the possible ramifications for agriculture.
