SA National Minimum Wage will increase on 1 March 2020

​​​​​​The National Minimum Wage Act 9 of 2018 (NMWA) came into operation on 1 January 2019. The national minimum wage figures as they currently stand are -

All workers

Farm workers only

Domestic workers only

ZAR 20 per hour

ZAR 18 per hour

ZAR 15 per hour


The Minister of Employment and Labour has recently announced that these figures will be increased with effect 1 March 2020. The new figures are -

All workers

Farm workers only

Domestic workers only

ZAR 20.76 per hour

ZAR 18.68 per hour

ZAR 15.57 per hour


The national minimum wage will increase by approximately 3.8% (in line with South Africa's annual inflation). This is despite trade unions calling for an increase of 12.5%.

In addition to the above, the Minister of Employment and Labour also announced specific increases, per region, in the contract cleaning sector and the wholesale and retail sector. To view these increases, click here.
