Competition and Trade Law Developments in 2024 and 2025 Outlook

In 2024, competition and trade law across Africa continued to evolve. In South Africa, key competition law developments included the Vodacom/Maziv merger, which underscored the delicate balance between public interest and competition law, alongside ongoing cases in the digital space. From a trade law perspective, implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) gained momentum and South Africa participated in the AfCFTA Guided Trade Initiative.

Looking ahead to 2025, significant developments are anticipated, including decisions in seminal competition law cases and clarity on whether the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) will be renewed.
